Meet Dana Von Dangerously, the Dismantled Fashions January Pin-Up of the Month! This doll is the first member of the Worldwide Greasers Club in her home state of PA (Pittsburgh to be exact!) - read my interview with Miss Dana to get to know her more!

When and how did you get into pin up modeling? :

I always wanted to do pin-up modeling, & finally worked up enough nerve to give it a shot! My first photo shoot ever was about 3 years ago for "Dots Diner", (And one of my other outfits I wore a <3 Dismantled Fashions <3 pencil skirt! ) Its still one of my favorite photos!

Who are a couple of your favorite photographers or models? :

Kelly Sickels Brown, Roy Varga, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, Bernie Dexter, Angela DeLegge

What inspires you to be unique? :

I don't wanna be your everyday average soccer mom, and I refuse to be part of "The Jealous Bitter Wives Club" You either love me or hate me, there's no in between!

Share some of your personal bombshell beauty secrets! Hair, makeup, etc :

False eyelashes are a must! Along with red lipstick! I think a pinups eyes & lips must POP! <3 I have a lot of thick Italian hair, so for me I find it easiest if I straighten my hair first & then do my favorite " Retro Do"

While living in Denver for a short stint, I had the pleasure of meeting one kick ass lady, Lydia. Not only is this girl a blast to go out dancing and drinking with.. she's talented to boot! Her shop, Stylemasters Hair Adornments and Accessories, has some of the most adorable, unique, and well constructed hair goodies out there.

We did a little accessories swap a while back, and she sent me this stunning piece... LOVE! It's seriously one of the sturdiest hair flowers I have ever worn. These puppies won't go anywhere! I definitely plan on snagging some of those hair bows soon too :)

Sewing through the ages! My new favorite collectible.

There's a few things I love across the board. Sewing, history, collectibles... It makes my newest collection/obsession seem obvious. A while back, I posted about acquiring my grandmothers vintage treadle machine, and that's where it all started. My momma found a 50s/60s table machine to add to the mix, and from there it snowballed. I decided I wanted any and every one I could get my hands on.

So, being a big fan of Freecycle, I kept an eye out for ads and even put up a wanted ad. Boy... did I score! All the machines below were completely free and in remarkably good condition, considering. I still need to do some research and find the years and stories on each model, but, I'm the luckiest sewing nerd ever!

The details!

This one came with a box of all the original attachments and notions, plus the original manual. It didn't say the exact year, but that it was manufactured between 1914 - 1941.

This is my favorite, by far. It looks like the Caddy of sewing machines!

Rockabilly Riot - Dusty Chance & the Allnighters

I think I have a new favorite anything, and it comes in the form of Dusty Chance & the Allnighters.

They're off of Wild Records, a rockabilly label out of Hollywood. I've heard a few Wild artists before and really loved them, but only about 4 days ago did I start really diving into all their bands. If you want guaranteed amazing music across the board, that's the place to look. In fact, you can expect to see a feature on a good number of their bands!

Old Timey Music from the Lowlifes (and graphic design!)

My husband, the ever changing musician, has recently started up a new project since we've moved back to Virginia - The High Street Lowlifes. It's a mixture of prohibition area Gypsy Jazz, swing, and just general old timey style. Plus, they dress all dapper! The other upside, is when they have rehearsal in the room next to my sewing studio. It's live music to work to!

Getting to make their flyers (like this one below) is so much fun for me. I do a lot of other design, but I never really get to do a lot of deco or 20s styles, so I love it. I'm so into it in fact, that I'm actually doing them so in advance the shows haven't even been booked yet!

Glamour on the Cheap - Hard Candy Concealer Review

Glamour on the Cheap. It's my new semi regular feature on beauty products that won't break your bank. Sure, high end brands are amazing, but it's nice to buy yourself a good product and not have to deal with buyers remorse afterwards. So here's your proof that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to look glamorous and gorgeous!

I admit it... My under eye circles are HORRIBLE. No matter how much I sleep or how well I take care of my skin, I still look like I went 3 rounds in a ring every day. Not to mention, I'm the proud owner of some early under eye wrinkles. It's something that has always bothered me, and I've tried a million concealers to hide the problem. From Bare Minerals to Benefit to just about every drugstore brand out there, I always hated something about it. Until I tried Hard Candy.

I really can't say enough about how much I love Glamoflauge. It covers my dark circles and problem spots like a dream, has amazing coverage and consistency and if set with a powder will last almost all day. I blend it out all over my eye area, and it never once settles into my creases. The other amazing part, you barely have to use any at all. For my entire face I use less than a pea size drop. It is so intense the smallest ammount goes a long way, so you're getting even more bang for your buck.

It also comes with the concealer pencil, but honestly, I've never really used it. It's a bit too small for larger areas (same size as a regular eyeliner pencil) so I just keep it in my case.. just in case ;)

A new year, the same laziness?

I've admitted a million times, I'm the worst blogger ever. I go for a bit where I'm on the ball... regular posts, new features, exciting things... then I get swamped with work and drop off the face of the earth for a month or two. So this begs the question, will I get my blogging act together for the new year or will I continue my cycle of blog failure? Let's hope for the first option!

Halloween! Kind of.

You know that moment when you realize you're getting old? When Halloween isn't the same spooky magical thing it used to be? Yeah, me neither. But, this year I did realize that I've gotten kind of lame in the party department. We only went out once, and it was a very middle of nowhere country bar that kind of reminded us of Merlotte's from True Blood. That's pretty spooky, right?!

Turns out we've also gotten lame in the costume department. I ended up getting way too busy to put together the amazing ideas I had and went for a last minute 'Die Die My Darling' look... and then my fella just played copy cat ;)

Handmade Spotlight - The Clay Pony

The Clay Pony is a shop of hand sculpted clay and resin art and jewelry by Stacie. A self proclaimed shop of cuteness and fan girl geekery, there is no shortage of either! You may not know it... but I'm a HUGE nerd. Yep. My fella and I adore Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and pretty much any other epic quest story. So, seeing all the house crest pendants Stacie has is like a fan girl dream for me. You should see the Horcruxes.. nerdy overload!

But other than that, she has the loveliest intricate pieces that totally appeal to my spooky side. Don't you just love the Ouija Board?!

Considering I'm the nosey type that likes to know all about everyone's everything (well, as far as style! I'm not a nosey body in every day life.. I promise!) Rockabilly Riot - The Slingshots

I might be a little sentimental when it comes to this band. You see, when my now husband and I first started dating after five years of friendship, this is the record he always had playing in his car wherever we'd go. I may have gotten attached... just a little. But in all fairness, it's not just my warm ooey gooey memories that make me adore the Slingshots. It's mostly because the second you hear it you're in love with the sound. You seriously can't be a lover of rockabilly and NOT want to listen to them nonstop. Taken from their official website:

Formed in Sheffield in 1984, The Slingshots launched themselves onto the burgeoning rockabilly scene with gusto and quickly became a band in demand. Often seen playing at some of the most prestigious events as well as local appearances, and always incorporating their own original material into their sets, the band impressed many with carefully crafted lyrics and arrangements -a tradition that they still maintain today. With the departure of the original bass player, Johhny Wood, the band failed to capitalise on their reputation and spent a number of years in the doldrums.

In 1999, performing as a drummer-less trio, Raucous Records released their album "Feels So Right", which contains many original compositions, including the seminal classic "Steamhammer Jones". This lineup took them through the following 10 years, but again, they remained out of the wider public eye.

From 2010, armed once more with a drummer and a new bass player, the Slingshots are, once again, back to traditional four-piece format. Armed with a slew of new songs, and revitalised energy, the Slingshots are still hard at work, playing the music they love, whenever possible, and picking up very positive comments wherever they play.

I'm also a big fan of their early 'bedroom sessions'...

Can you see why that's one of my favorite rockabilly vocalists of all time now?!

It was quite a Rockabilly Affair!

I should have blogged about this way earlier, but between a rush of orders and the almost week spent as a flu germ factory (and of course sheer laziness) I haven't taken the time to do it until now.

A couple weeks ago, I had what turned out to be my biggest event ever. I woke my sweetie up at the crack of dawn and packed all my things up to drive down to Houston. I prepped and made plans with the lovely and talented Sabrina Sin for months for this, so needless to say... I was completely and utterly stressed! Oh and of course excited ;) I was not only putting on a full 8 piece runway show, but was also taking orders at my booth and judging the pin up contest. While I spent the whole night running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, I loved every second of it!

I think the coolest moment ever for a designer is standing backstage watching a line of gorgeous models wearing your designs get ready to walk down the runway. I've done a few shows in my time and I still think that is the best part. Sure, seeing the actual walk is amazing with the crowd jeers and camera flashes... but there's just something about that anticipation moment that makes it all worth it! My other favorite part of the evening was the fact that I completely forgot to plan any music for the actual runway portion, and just told them to wing it. Turns out the DJ accidentally picked one of my favorite songs from my all time favorite band. Quite a cool moment to hear it blare out unexpectedly!

Other than some go-go hula dancing after much whiskey years ago, that was the first time I had ever been on a stage. I hope my utter stage terror played off more like humble and cute... not scary. Rockabilly Wednesday - The Voronas

I really should have a phone alarm set for remembering to do weekly features. Especially because I have more planned. Am I the only one who gets too busy and forgets they have a designated blog topic? :D

This week's featured band (and for me, it's gonna be probably the whole month) is The Voronas. I literally just found out about this band earlier while trolling Youtube for cool retro spooky songs. I had been stuck in a Crypt-Kickers loop for some time when I looked at the little recommended videos section on the side. That's when I saw this band. I originally thought it was an old tune based on the sound and voice and that's what drew me in. Don't get me wrong, I love psychobilly I really do.. but doesn't the constant cheesy lyrics about bats and coffins set to generic clicky slap bass really get old to you?

That is exactly why I fell in love with The Voronas. The lyrics are still (sometimes) dark and spooky without the over the top cheese factor, and the completely original sounding vocals and the mix of all different styles of music make this a band to remember. Think The Cramps meets gypsy jazz fused with blues and a dash of rockabilly. Intrigued yet? Listen for yourself!

Woo! It's Saturday! Which for me means day 6 of a 7 day work week! :P

While I'd normally spend my free time hanging out with my husband watching Netflix (because we're party animals), he's out for the night for man times and music down on 6th street. So, instead, I'm going to catch up on the mass amounts of things I keep meaning to blog about. My husband just happens to be one of those things!

My fella is quite the musician. If you've ever read my past blogs, you'd know he's always in one (or 4) bands or another. I usually try to make every show if my health or schedule allows, and I've recently made it a goal of mine to take pictures of him at every new venue to make a big photo album of every place he's played. It seems like the kind of thing our children would like to see one day, you know? Considering he's been playing upright bass professionally for almost 10 years now, I've missed a lot. But hey.. I gotta start somewhere!

A Rockabilly Affair

A few months ago when I found and signed on one of my newest models, Sabrina Sin, she asked if I'd ever be interested in doing a fashion show. Of course I giddily agreed. I adore runway shows. The excitement of planning and knowing all eyes are on your work.. yep.. it's no surprise I opted in. Talks progressed quickly and all sorts of additions were made. Pin Up contest, small hot rod show, bands, burlesque, ect. Looked like the event was gonna happen.. and soon!

During our shoot together for the new Dismantled Fashions items, we threw in some event promo shots of Sabrina and her business partner Sarah Sacrifice. Thanks to the ever great Adam of Lucky Devil Pin Ups.. I think it came out great! I'm kinda all jump around excited that the event is named after my company.. tag line and all! I feel so important and stuff :) It will be an all around night of fabulous retro pin up goodness - for charity! Let me tell you, there is nothing more rewarding than getting dolled up and having fun for a good cause. It means you can drink more and not feel guilty!

So now I'm about what... three weeks away? I'm half done with the clothing and have my pin up contest prize basket all planned out. I still have to think what I'd like to do with my booth without clothing (You bet your bottom I have no extra time to make stock!) I'm going to post pictures of my progress so if you can't make it you can get a sneak peek at least. And if you're in the Houston area.. come on out!

Rockabilly Wednesday - Sparkle Moore

I usually try to pick current bands or artists for my weekly spotlight, mostly because I love giving an artist any chance to be heard by new people. Must have picked up that "support the musician" mindset from being married to one! But, Everytime I talk to someone about female rockabilly singers only a few seem to know about Sparkle, and that is why I think I'm going to branch out just a bit and relive some oldies than you might not have heard of.

Sparkle Moore is one of my favorite, if not number one, female rockabilly artist of all time. There is something so tough and rebellious about her voice while at the same time being adorable and feminine. This woman can sing I tell ya! She only recorded a few songs in her career but opened doors for female 'billy right alongside Wanda Jackson and Janis Martin.

Did I mention she has style?!

The busiest season ever.

This is the first spare second I've had in what feels like forever. I've taken on so many projects at once and I'm swimming in work. Is it amazing? Yes. Am I totally stressed? Completely. I love every second, don't get me wrong :)

A few weeks ago decided it was time for an insane amount of new items all at once (or close to once) and much of the past month has been spent working those details out. I've signed on around 5 new Texas models that I'm so excited to work with. I'll be doing a spotlight post on them soon so you'll get to see! I'm looking at doing somewhere in the neighborhood of 15+ new items in the next few months. I know.. I'm insane.

Here's a tiny sneak peek of a couple things that will be in my upcoming photoshoot with my friend Adam of Lucky Devil Pin Ups. ...

That particular shoot will be doing double duty as the photos will be used in promotional flyers for my fashion show set for September in Houston. It'll be a pin up extravaganza, car show, runway show of Dismantled Fashions plus bands vendors and more. The event is even titled "Retro Class Meets Modern Trash" - do you have any idea how excited I am for this?!! It feels so amazing that people love what I do enough that an event was inspired by it. I feel so cool. :) I'll probably have lots of posts on this as details get worked out.

And to top it all off, I'm currently working on a wholesale order! Phew!

Tutorial : Recycled Cardboard Magnets with your Photos

Necessity is the mother of invention. I came up with this idea after deciding I really wanted some fridge magnets, but a.) didn't know where to find them and b.) have been trying to make a promise to myself to make anything I can to save money, and most importantly, using things I already have in my craft stash.

Everything I used for these I already had, including the magnets. I recently purchased a new dry erase board for my studio space and it came with all types of things for mounting, including two long magnet strips. Cut those babies into small pieces and you've got enough for 10+ fridge magnets. Score! If you don't have anything like that, you can buy all different types from the craft store for pretty cheap. As for the cardboard, I used the cardboard mailers from USPS. It's a great way to recycle if you get one in the mail (just make sure you only use the bits that aren't wrinkled or mangled!) or, you can get them for free from your local post office. Ok, let's get to the how to!

MATERIALS NEEDED :

A Cardboard mailer.
Mod Podge in Gloss
Sponge Brush
Small Magnet
Image of your choice*

* You can use magazine clippings, your own art, printed images from your computer (I recommend making sure it's printed at 300dpi for quality) or anything you can imagine. For best results though, don't use a paper that is very thick, such as actual photographs. Just print a copy on regular paper :)

Roughly cut out your image and three pieces of cardboard about the same size. You don't have to be perfect or exact, because at the end you'll clean up the edges.

Glue all three pieces of cardboard together only at this step together by putting a layer of Mod Podge on each piece. Make sure as you're going that a cardboard color side is on top at all times. This is so when you go to put your image on, there will be no writting from the mailer showing through. Plus, it sticks together better this way. It's going to curl a bit as you can tell, but it's ok. Just lay the pieces flat on your table and smooth them flat as you go. Allow this to dry before you move on.

Then, put a thin but full coverage layer on the back of your image and carefully smooth it onto your cardboard stack. Be careful of bubbles, and use care so you don't rip or smudge your picture. The glue makes it all wet and fragile, so just be aware! Let this dry before moving on.

Carefully put a thin,even coat of Mod Podge on top. Go in one direction only, and don't use too much. Try not to go over the same spot more than once as your picture's ink may start to smear. Don't worry about the fact that its white, it dries clear :) Let this dry completely.

There's no picture of the next step, as it would look exactly like the last one. All you need to do now is once your first coat is completely dry, start adding a second and third coat. You can add more if you feel like it needs it, it's up to you. You can go over it more than once now, as the colors are set and won't budge. Do let it dry a bit in between coats though. Make sure every coat is even and thin for a really nice glossy finish.

Then, when you're satisfied with the finish. Let dry again. Wait till it's verrrry dry before you go on, or you'll be met with a gummy gross mess! When it's hard to the touch, you'll know you're ready. Cut your picture out. Now you'll see why we waited to do this... super clean edges! Admire your work so far and feel proud.

All that's left is to glue on a magnet to the back. You can use the Mod Podge for this step too, it holds fine!

That's it! You're done. Your magnet is ready to use once it's dry. After a few days of curing, it'll become completely hard.

Here are a few more I made for myself. As you can see from the PBR ad, you can cut out shapes too. I'd reccommend keeping the shapes simple though, as these are pretty thick to cut through!

I'm back to doing music posts like I promised! Dear lord help me remember to do this every week haha!

This week is a bit of a special one, as it's a band my husband is currently playing for. And no, I promise that is not why I chose them. Since moving to Austin, Texas, we've had the pleasure of meeting a lot of great bands and a lot of great people. Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers, I can easily say, is my favorite band that I have found here thus far. The fact that my fella plays for them is just a bonus of me getting to make every show!

Not only is Jorge an amazing guitar player, and Ruby has pipes to make me jealous for days, but their adorable and fun stage presence keeps you entertained the whole time. I dare you to catch them live and not want to at least dance in your seat. My personal favorite song? "Since You Went Away" - I just love the intro! Listen for yourself here :)

Tutorial : DIY Vinyl Wall Art

If you're in the unlucky boat of a renter like I am, you probably hate your plain white walls. There is only so much you can do with framed art and photos before it gets stale. You may have seen some of the vinyl wall art on Etsy or elsewhere that makes a great solution for this. It's removable, leaves no residue and is extremely easy to use. But.. what if you (like me again) are on the worlds smallest decorating budget? Or what if you simply can't find the design you're looking for?

Fear not! The budget designer in me has a simple and easy project for you. It's 100% customization, affordable, and only limited by your imagination. The following tutorial will tell you how I did the design below, but just use your trusty crafty skills and the basic idea and you can do anything you want!

What you'll need:

One roll of Self-Adhesive Vinyl. Retails for $7.99 at Hobby Lobby and comes in many different colors. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/store/item.aspx?ItemId=149777 You get quite a lot on a roll. I only used half of mine on the entire project.
A pencil for tracing onto the back of the vinyl.
Objects to trace. For the above design, I traced random objects from around the house. For example on the smaller circles I used a sugar dispenser, the bottom of a candle, ect. The main center circle is a traced 45 record! Use whatever objects you have for the size and scale you want.
A long ruler or yard stick for the straight lines.
Scissors.

Step 1 - Prep the vinyl. As you can see if you click the link provided, the vinyl comes as a tight wound roll. You'll want to unroll it and roll it again the opposite way to help flatten it out. It's easier to work with when it's not rolling up on itself! Once you have your flat piece, you'll notice that there is a white paper backing. This is the side you'll be working with.

Step 2 - Start tracing and cutting out your pieces. Every piece in the design above is it's own element. I started by tracing and cutting the main center circle. After that, I cut various lengths and widths of straight lines. Then, do your smaller circles. For the outline circles, just trace a smaller one in the center and cut it out. Keep the paper backing on until you're completely ready to attach to the wall. I found it helpful to arrange the pieces on the floor until it looked exactly like I wanted.

Step 3 - Getting it on the wall. I had it easy, because I knew I wanted it center with my couch. You might need to do some measuring and planning here depending on your room layout. If you planned it out on the floor or a table first, it makes this much easier. You just start transferring! Peel off the backing and carefully smooth each piece onto the wall, being mindful of air bubbles. Start with the straight lines, then the circles on top of them. It's somewhat repositionable, so if you make a mistake you can carefully peel it off and try again.

That's about the gist of it! For the smaller starbursts on either side, I simply printed them from my computer, cut them out and then traced them onto the vinyl in the same way. If you use that method, you can really do almost any design. If you're handy with a pencil and an exacto knife, your possibilities are even greater! Think of it like cutting out a stencil, same principal!

ME! Oh wow, thank you! What an honor!

... Actually, a dishonor. I feel like I've entirely neglected my poor blog which unfortunately is something I tend to be quite good at. I've had a very busy few months full of ups and downs, but I'm finding the juggling skills to bring it all together with enough time to do everything I've been missing.

I've got oodles to blog about from becoming a Mrs. in an unexpected way, crafty tutorials, the return of a (hopefully) weekly music showcase, a new hair tutorial or two in the works, Dismantled Fashions news and new products.. and lots more. I just wanted to do a quick post to see if I'm remembered and to apologize for the crickets and tumbleweeds you've been seeing around here before I jump back into the swing of things!

Pinup Tips part. 2!

It's been so long since I did my first post on pin up tips, but with all the questions and emails I've been getting I decided to reopen the feature. I said it before, I'm no pinup or expert by any means, this is just some of my personal advice!

I previously talked about a basic first step, getting your portfolio together. But something I missed touching on is perfecting your personal style.

Tip #2 - Get the Look.

The pin up look is classic. It's essential. This goes for wardrobe and accessories. Find what works for you and is the perfect reflection of you. It's so important to have your personal style nailed down and be able to execute it yourself. There may be a lot of amazing makeup and hair artists out there, but when you're starting out you might not always have that option. Even girls in the pin up world for a long time still don't always have that help. You also open yourself up for more shoots and opportunities if you can do your own styling. Think about it, a photographer wants to set something up but has no MUAH and if you can't do it yourself, you miss out! Not to mention, when you know what works perfectly for your shape and your coloring, you're guaranteed to be a knock out everytime, and original to boot.

Hair is the most vital. In my personal opinion, if you just show up to a shoot with plain straight hair or a pony tail, I'm gonna be disappointed. It's not pinup style. It just looks like you didn't care much. You don't have to be the worlds best stylist or do perfect rolls, but at least put a curl set in! As far as makeup, the pinup style can be simple and classic or out of this world. It all depends on your styling and concept. But always put a fresh polished face forward! And of course general "goeswithoutsaying" grooming. Be a lady, darling! No pinup has crazy werewolf eyebrows or bushy pits, let's be honest.

There are tons of YouTube tutorials out there for easy beginner styles and ways to build up your skills. Practice, practice, practice! Watch and attempt. Rinse and repeat till it's second nature!

Ah, I think I win for cheesy titles! A couple weeks ago, I had my first photoshoot since moving to Texas. I was lucky enough to stumble upon an AMAZING photographer on Model Mayhem, Adam of Lucky Devil Pinups. His style is so clean and editorial, it's absolutely perfect and dead on for what I do. The stunning model, Devil Kitten, is a funny story in itself - we had been talking about working together a good while ago and had to put it on hold while she moved. Turns out, she moved to Austin... and at that point I was on my way here too! It's a small pinup world, I tell ya!

I know, I've been somewhat MIA lately. It's usually when things in my life are at their best that I don't take the extra time to blog. But, that's when I should be sharing! So, here's the slow and skinny and very abridged version of my current life..

I'm SO busy, it's not even funny. And, I'm not complaining. Business is booming, I'm loving every second of my housewifery, and the fella is juggling bands left and right which keeps our weekends pretty booked. I'm trying to remember to take more photos and videos when we go out, I just usually have a drink or two and forget! No more of that, I promise!

It's really amazing when you come to a point in your life where you've been through about 80 tons of crap and you finally peek out and realize things are good and exactly where they should be.

My 23rd birthday is coming up on Monday. I know, I know - I'm just SO old. (hehe) and I think the past year of my life has been the most insane and changing. Since this time last year, I began dating and then became engaged to my best friend of 5 years, I've moved more times than I can count, and had more personal hardships than I care to divulge. It'll also be the first year I don't get to spend with all my best friends and family, as they're all back on the east coast. But, I'm so far from complaining! This is the time in my life where I can start answering all the questions.. where do I want to be? what do I want to be? - The hard part is done for me. I have an amazing fella and a new lease on life. I'm ready to start growing up!

Spring shoes on the cheap!

It's time it's time! Spring is officially here down in Texas. Well, to me, it feels more like summer being in the 80's, but I guess I'm just used to the old Virginia weather. This is my absolute favorite time for clothes and shoes, as you can bring out the halters and shorts, but still be able to layer a cardigan (my personal favorite item EVER)

I've seen SO many people blogging and Facebooking about cute new spring/summer shoes from Miss L Fire - and lord knows, I'd snag them in a heartbeat if I could afford it. But, if you're anything like me right now... $100+ on shoes just ain't happening. That's my electricity bill right there! So while I sit and dream and scheme to win the lottery, I'll share some of my finds for adorable shoe bliss on a budget. I admit, they don't remotely compare, but hey, they're all under $30 and that counts for something!

Miss Polka Dot Wedge from Payless at $26.99. These are my #1 pick - I love them - and they come in red too! There were some other so-so picks on there too, but nothing worth writing home about.

Rockabilly Girl flats from Charlotte Russe at $19.50 - Damn them and their cliche naming.. but gah! they got me. I love it. I'm such a sucker for flats and leopard print. They had some other totally cute wedges and leopard print night time shoes, worth looking at the whole section for sure.

Pink Leatherette Wedges from Forever 21 at $26.80 - There were so many cute ones here, it was hard to pick. I just love the color of these, it's not something you see constantly. And that double bow!

So there's some options that won't break the bank and should hold you over until you get that tax return! Or in my case, a day job hah! Got any ones to share? I'd love to see!

Remember the shoot from a few months back I did with my best friend and pin up queen, Bonnie Dee? Well, the photographer submitted the photos to CKD for Bonnie to be Deluxe Gal of the month.. and here she is! Full page spread about my favorite lady, I am seriously so proud.

Hello Texas! Oh yeah, and I'm back :)

Whew! I missed the internet. You completely do not realize how addicted you are until you go a week without it.

But! We are settling in nicely to our new apartment in Texas. It's so roomy! I swear, the closet in my new studio is almost big enough to be a bedroom. I'm not at all used to this much room... but it gives me a reason to buy new things (much to the dismay of the fella) We're working on decorating and getting new furniture to fill in the gaps, and it's been so much fun. After the epic year of moving, it's really nice to know we are settling in an area for good!

The best part of the move had to be our stop along the way in Nashville. It's where my best friend and model, Bonnie Dee and her husband are living (though I hear rumors of a move to Texas?!) Those two are adorably enough, the matron of honor and best man in our wedding, so needless to say it was so much fun hanging out with them again.

Bonnie had a shoot planned the day of our visit and asked if I'd like to tag along and join in on it. Ummm. yes! Even though it was so weird to be on that side of the camera, it was crazy fun.

Wedding planning.. the photographer

To me, nothing is more important than finding the perfect photographer. After all is said and done, the decorations, the food, that isn't what lasts. The pictures and the memories, they stay with you. Ten, twenty years later - you'll be able to look back on those amazing photos and remember how it all was, and be able to share them with with everyone who matters.

So, I'm completely thrilled to be able to say I have THE perfect one, Valerie Demo Photography. The fella and I are lucky, as Valerie is one of our good friends and the best wedding photographer I've ever seen. I had such a hard time picking these few photos to share because every single one is amazing. She has this way of capturing the perfect moments of gooey wedded bliss. I also love the unexpected shots she takes, like the one below of the shoes and bouquets. (Which by the way, I LOVE the colors in that. Someone has good taste.)

The first steps of my DIY wedding.

I thought I'd share my experiences and ideas with you all as I go along. If nothing else, it will keep me on track! Iit's been a crash course of figuring out how to do absolutely everything myself, as I'm dead set on no hired help. I do everything else in my life DIY, why not this?

Step one: Invitations! I've designed them myself, and plan to have them printed by the same place I get all my promo items for the shop - CHEAP! The only thing left to figure out on that is how I plan to do the reply cards! I'm even tossing around the idea of a wedding website to do online RSVP...

The invite mock-up, still needs details added!

Step two: Attire. For my dress, well, I'm getting there. A website that has been amazing in the dress hunt has been http://www.unique-vintage.com - chock full of vintage inspired wedding wear and also a bunch of other ugly crap. If you weed through it, you'll find some amazing things. I've got it narrowed down and I'll be ordering one soon. A big upside is a great return/exchange policy, that way I can ensure it fits perfectly! As for the bridal party, I'm keeping it simple. I'm having my girls choose their own dress, as long as it's black with at least a vintage/rockabilly silhouette, I'll be happy. Matching dresses are not my style anyway. I'll be making my own hairpieces for them in which will double as my gift. I'll post more on those as I start them!

Ok, I don't know for a fact that's where the shop name came from (I'll have to ask her!) but I'm going out on a limb and guessing it was that song. If not, well, it just reminds me of it. And then compels me to go listen to it...

Completely beside the point! Kitsch Kraft is the name of shop run by my best friend, Bonnie Dee. You know, that insanely cute model I posted about recently? I know, cute and talented.. no fair :) She's also the one who did the bulk of the Dismantled Fashions logo, and who's face is on my main promo image. Obviously, I'm a big fan.

And here is my notoriously late post about it all. Anyway! I hope y'all had a great holiday season. I know we did over here. Just look at us being all goofy in front of my mommas tree. I also hope you got everything you wanted for Christmas too! I made out this year and got things I didn't even know I wanted, thanks to my very observant fella. This one is my favorite:

Then for NYE, we got all gussied up in our best attempt at 1920s attire for a speakeasy theme party. Complete with the Charleston and all. Aren't the decorations amazing?! Everyone was dressed to the nines, makes me wish I wouldn't have waited till I was on my way to buy something hah!

Feather Fascinator Tutorial

Here is a tutorial for a basic, cheapy, fascinator. Perfect for whipping up simple ones to match outfits, or take the general idea and use fabulous materials to make stunning pieces. This is one of a thousand options and infinite designs, but it should give you some ideas if you'd like to start making your own!

Gather your materials...

Glue gun or whatever type of glue you prefer.
Black sew in interfacing for the base (found in fabric stores)
Feathers. I chose a big bag of random ones I bought from Hobby Lobby for $2 and pulled out the best. There are much better quality feathers out there, I just wanted cheapie stuff to play with.
Any other additions you want. Rhinestones, buttons, ribbon, ect. Possibilities are endless!
An alligator clip (recommended) or any barrette or clip for actually wearing it. *Not pictured

Start by cutting out your basic shape from the interfacing. For this one, I chose a teardrop. You could in theory do anything you like, but this is the most common. It doesn't have to be perfect, your feathers will cover the edges. On this particular one, I cut out two and glued them together for durability. This is entirely up to you.

Begin gluing on and layering your feathers to your liking. Be careful not to use too much glue that it bleeds through the feathers. If you do a little, no problem, you'll be building over it anyway.

Eventually you'll get a covered base. Starting to shape up!

Next, I added a second type of feathers for added detail, plus a small rhinestone button. In hindsight, should have used a bigger one! You can find gorgeous buttons with a vintage flair in craft or fabric stores, just look around and find your perfect pieces. Add any other embellishments you'd like at this point.

Now, flip it over. Cut a small rectangle of the interfacing just a little shorter than the clip and around 3 times wider.

I didn't get a picture of this step, but I'll try to explain. Basically, open the clip. On the side with teeth, put a bead of glue. Attach the small rectangle. Then, apply glue all over the back of that piece and attach it to your base.

Voilà! It's all done!

This project took me about 10 minutes, start to finish. It may be a VERY basic style of fascinator, but it really gives you an idea of how to go about it. Switch up the feathers, add flowers or bows, rhinestones... anything! It's all up to your creativity.

I was talking to the fella once about how there are so many vintage lifestyle and general style blogs for the ladies, but we don't know of any for men.Well, today when he was looking up ways to quickly break in a new leather jacket (His early Christmas present hehe), he remembered The Art of Manliness. The name makes me want to say it all dramatically and serious. :)

It's not 100% vintage lifestyle centered, but it does have a lot of focus on the lost manly ways of the old times. With sections like "Dress & Grooming" and "Manly Skills", the manly man in your life will probably love it.

They have pretty great t-shirts too. This one is my man's favorite...

Hair Tutorial - Face Framing Rolls

Yay, my first video tutorial! Wait... my first tutorial of any kind. Excuse the grainy quality, I'm working out kinks :) With the help of my darling fella, I plan on doing a lot more. Hair, crafty projects, whatever we think up. On to this one!

Just a simple and quick yet stylish look. A great look for those of us growing out our bangs and are stuck in that weird inbetween phase. It involves three semi-large rolls going down the side of the face. If you do a good roller set first, doing the style is a breeze. It pretty much forms itself! For the best curl with hot rollers, I roll as tight as I can and spray each section with hairspray first. Just make sure you don't go all the way to the crown, as a flat top is the best for vintage styles. You can really do a lot just with this setting pattern, play around with it!

A couple days ago, my best friend in the world and gorgeous model, Bonnie Dee, did a shoot for me with UVUDU? Imaging... and I'm thrilled with the results. I've only gotten a few edits back from one of the items so far, but they are great and I had to share.

These were taken in the retro amazing home of the husband/wife photography duo of King Dado and Kallisto Killer - I think it makes the perfect set for my clothing. It almost looks like it was set up just for shoots, I love it.

I think I'm the only girl in the world who would brag about how cheap her ring was. I'm just not a "stuff" person, as I like to call it. I've never felt the need for expensive things or designer brands just for the name. If I like it, I like it, regardless of price. When it came to the idea of a ring, I made it very clear to the fella I didn't want anything pricey, and something very simple as I like really understated jewelry. It seems like a waste to me, and that's a lot of money you could spend on something else you want!

Well, we were out doing some antique/vintage store pursuing and I spotted this gorgeous ring in the case. I asked to try it on, and it actually fit. I was surprised to then find out it was so cheap.. and yes.. it's real white gold and diamond. And, it's vintage. I was in love. The fella then proceeded to buy it, and get down on one knee right out in front of the shop.

(It's a bit yellowed and dirty, I still need to get it cleaned!)

Being engaged to your best friend and the best man in the world.. it's the best feeling in the world. ♥

Maybelline Gel Eyeliner is ♥

Being as I was in the market for a new eyeliner, I decided to check the drugstore makeup selection last time I went in. I've never been one to only use expensive high end makeup. I do love all the fancy things... who doesn't? But, shoot, some of my favorite eyeshadow is by ELF (the line where almost everything is a dollar. And it's amazing! I digress...) Basically, I'm not afraid of the cheapies. But a good and I mean good liquid liner has always been hard to find. It's always way too expensive for as quick as I go through it, not very longwearing, or has a crap applicator. And a good applicator is crucial for perfect vintage cat eyes!

Well, I think I found my new love...

It's the Maybelline Gel Liner. It has a great consistency and high pigmentation. It comes with the brush shown too, so major points there. It makes getting the right shape perfect. The longevity of it is great too. I've been using it to fill in my brows too, and they aren't rubbing off when I kiss the fella like they used to. You barely have to use any, so I'm guessing it's going to last a long while. And at around $10 for the whole shebang... I'm sold.

Vintage Sewing Machine Love

It's no secret I adore vintage sewing machines. I even got one tattooed on me. I just love how ornate and neat looking they used to be. It's like the machine used to create beautiful things is a beautiful thing in itself!

I've been saying for years how much I want one to display in my home, but every time I find one it happens to be when I don't have an extra dollar to spare. I never cared much if it worked or not (though don't get me wrong, it would be amazing if I had one that did!) I just wanted one for decoration in my studio. Well, imagine the smiles I had when my Dad pulled this old diamond in the rough out of his shed for me. It's belonged to his mother, and he had been holding onto it for years before he decided to give it to me.

Unfortunately, the table and all the original bits are missing, but it doesn't take away from the aesthetic appeal of what is left. I know - It sure is worn and rough looking, but I plan on starting up research to remove the mass amounts of rust and attempt to restore it to some former glory. If anyone has any ideas or tips on this, I'd love to hear it!

I had to share this awesome mini-documentary with y'all. The band featured is Wayne Hancock, which of course my amazingly talented fiancée plays bass for. (Wha?! I'm proud!)

It's pretty great to see how into it the folks being interviewed are. There's no pretentiousness about them, and I love that. It's a lifestyle, and it's lived and breathed.

Not to mention.. aren't they adorable?! Their house is fabulous.

Up to moving.. again! We've left Denver already and are back in VA for a few months. The boyfriend got an amazing gig with Wayne Hancock and is all tour tour tour these days. I'm a proud girl. However it means we're on our way to Austin, TX come the new year. I'm pretty excited, I gotta say. And while I hate the away time, it's helping me get more into Dismantled Fashions again. Good lord.. I haven't posted since MAY! What is wrong with me? Oh, I know. My life has been a damn whirlwind, that's what. Where to begin... well.. On a personal note I started dating my best friend of five years in late May (feel free to aww.. I do too.) and couldn't be happier. He sure is a swell feller. Certainly explains the lack of free time for a couple months there. Ain't the honeymoon phase grand?

That aside, around the begining of July I moved halfway across the country. The both of us were just fed up with Virginia and the lack of excitement we found there and went searching for greener pastures (but don't say anything.. I like to pretend otherwise when I'm mad!) So we are now official Colorado residents with a darling little apartment just outside of Denver. And I do mean darling.. and I do mean little hah! It's just enough room for the two of us and our newly acquired vintage furniture and DIY decor. It sure is fun having a guy willing to learn the fine art of crafting. We've framed our favorite Googie architecture photos and made an amazing starburst mirror so far. I promise to post pictures just as soon as I get a card reader... or at least wireless internet so I can start using my computer again. For now I at least have this one.. It's one of our good friends from VA who now lives in CO too and us.

Dear poor neglected blog, I'm so sorry I've left you alone and unattended. I've just been so busy being fabulous, I haven't had time to talk about it! Allow me to explain (I really wish I hadn't broken my camera so I could add pictures to all this. I bet they'd be epic.)

It's warm weather time, so I've been doing a good amount of my favorite activity.. porch sittin'. Grab a beer or some Malibu and a lawn chair, and there you have it. As night hits, add in a fire pit and you're good to go.

Aside from that, I spend a lot of time going to really amazing shows. In fact, this past weekend I saw 4 separate great ones. The always entertaining Two Tone Cadillac and Johnny Trash Trio. (But then again, I may be partial as one of my best friends is in both of those. Beside the point! Check them out!). But the creme de la creme of the weekend would easily be the fact that I saw The Two Man Gentlemen Band - ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Talk about a breath of fresh air. Not only is it some great vaudevillian swing style music, or that they have the greatest fashion sense, the stage show is bar far the most entertaining thing I've seen in quite some time.

Richmond Burlesque is All the Rage!

The burlesque scene in Richmond has been going strong for some time now, but only recently have I been getting more into it myself. Thursday I attended the first Burlesque and B-Movie night at my favorite local bar, Wonderland. It was appropriately titled 'Faster Pussycat, Strip Strip!' - I know, it's amazing. Think beer, fried chicken, cute dancing girls and all the while Faster Pussycat Kill Kill! playing in the background.

Sunday was the aforementioned Rockabilly Burlesque Brunch. (Look at the fabbbulous flyer!) Yours truly was there, of course. (Mostly because I was a sponsor, and also because I'll go to damn near anything that has rockabilly in the title) It was no surprise that the show was amazing. My three favorite burlesque babes had amazing performances, while the out of towner Kitty Baby showed off a great routine. I have to say, and not only because she's a good friend and I'm partial, Deepa De Jour had one hell of a fabulous act.. by far my favorite routine ever.. Lend me Your Comb! Pomade can pasties?! Yes.

I'm hoping to be more involved as a sponsor and even just as a fan. And maybe they'll let me be the b-movie night host if I pester enough! :)

Rockabilly Riot (#9) - Bible Belt Sinners

Finally doing another one! Back with a bang I'd say, because this is one of the best bands I've heard in a long time. I just discovered them a week or two ago and I can't stop listening. I love finding music that exciting!

Bible Belt Sinners are a 4 piece rockabilly band from St. Louis. They've got a traditional rockabilly sound for the most part, but there is also something there that is just a bit... more. Maybe it's the female lead vocals that give a wink and a nod to the fabulous Sparkle Moore or Wanda Jackson. My personal favorite song: 'Hot Headed'

Here's a video of a live cover of a favorite song of mine. The sound quality isn't the best, so make sure you listen to the songs on Myspace!

A while ago, one of my burlesque dancing friends, Deanna Danger, asked me if I'd be interested in styling a flyer photoshoot for a special event. Well, yeah! The icing on the cake was that the event was a rockabilly/pin up inspired shindig. I promptly changed my answer to a big old 'hell yes'! After some talks and a fitting with the two lovely girls, plus a photoshoot by Ginger of 422 Studio, these images were born. I'm really glad I was asked to be a part of this and I really can't wait to see the flyer around town. (I'll probably jack one to keep in my studio area, shh!)

I'll also be at the event with a little table and raffling off a Dismantled Fashions skirt. There are talks this raffle business might be a recurring thing. Oooh, exciting!

Vintage vs. Rockabilly

This is something that I've been thinking of a bit lately. Inspired by a favorite fellow bloggers post on something loosely related (well, more so some of the comments) I decided to do some late night musing on the subject. Until recently, I never made a distinction between the two. To me it was always that I just love vintage things and rockabilly music.. anything old timey. But the more I got into the rockabilly scene and then the vintage blogging community, it's apparently pretty different.

The way I'm seeing it is the so called "rockabillies" are drawn by the music. Sure, I got into the style too, who doesn't? But we (I'm throwing myself in this corner) know it ain't the damn 50's anymore and certainly aren't trying to recreate it, but it was an amazing time for music and the look just kind of follows. I love everything about the era too, but I'm no purist. Honestly, I don't think I own one item actually from the 40s or 50s. It doesn't mean I don't love it and wouldn't be delighted to have a closet full of fabulous vintage clothing, but it's just not as much of a passion for me. I look at it as inspiration for a modern lifestyle. That is why I read vintage lifestyle blogs and love old magazines and movies. I take the past and spin it around to make sense for me today.

So, "purist" vintage girls.. how do you feel about this? What got you interested in it and why is it so important to be era correct and all that? And if I'm wrong on anything, please tell me! I'm finding this more and more interesting and would love opinions.

What I've been up to...

Whew! I've been busy. I've slacked a little bit on my usual weekly features, but for good reason, I promise.

I'm super excited to say that you will soon be able to purchase Dismantled Fashions at Beyond the Trap Door in Western Australia. They will be the exclusive dealer in the area too! It of course means I'll be super busy getting the items together.. eek! As much as I love getting a new retail location, that's a lot of work. I'm ready for it though. Just means I'll be blogging even less for a while.

And one more exciting piece of news, on or around April 15th, if you walk into your local bookstore make sure you pick up a copy of Twisted South Magazine. Why? There is an interview with yours truly in the debut issue! There is a great article on what they refer to as 'trashy fashion'. I'd just call it rockabilly/psychobilly style, but that works too. As soon as I get my hands on a copy I'll scan and post the article. Make sure you read it so you can laugh at what a dork I am in interviews.

The Belmont Playboys - The Belmont Playboys are a rockabilly revival band, formed around 1990 in Charlotte, NC. The band’s mission is to combine traditional rockabilly instrumentation and songs with strong original material, delivered with the energy and intensity of a punk band.

I was only recently introduced to this band, but they are quickly working their way to the top of my list of current favorites. Take a listen for yourself, I think you'll agree!

Vintage Family Photos

This is probably my favorite photo. On the left is my grandma, Mavis with her cousin Rena Fay. I just love it because not only are they both absolutely gorgeous, they just look so happy!

I'm not exactly sure when this photo was made, but I know it was around the time my grandma met my grandpa. He asked her for a date, and she was so nervous she had to bring her cousin along with them. Maybe the photo was from that night?

I recently participated in a fun new thing going on over at DIYscene.com. If you don't know, DIYscene is a forum for crafters and crafty lovers that I like to visit. It's also a really supportive Etsy street team :) I digress.. I was asked a bunch of funny, random, and a couple serious questions as part of a new feature on the team blog, Ask Me Anything. Here's a couple good ones..

- You mean to tell me some people think there is such a thing? That's crazy!

Do you wear short shorts?

- Who doesn't?! My favorite thing in the summer is cut off denim shorts. I'm country.

Rockabilly Riot (#8) - Hamburger James

Hamburger James - Born in Memphis, raised in Virginia. It's a band heavily influenced by the Sun Records era mixed with southern style and just a touch of that 80s rockabilly revival. I have a soft spot for this band because they're hometown boys from Richmond. Finding any kind of rockabilly in this city is hard enough, so to find an actually good band is pretty amazing and deserving of a feature. Go to their website to have a listen, and enjoy the adorable jukebox style music player!

Seems I haven't posted much about the happenings in the Dismantled Fashions world lately. So let's see...

New items are in the works! I've got some adorable ideas up my sleeve and I'm working on them as time permits. Let me tell you, you're gonna love 'em.
Speaking of that, the new models I recently signed on are slowly receiving their items. Color me excited! The first one up is Twila of The Mysterious Life of the Metropolitan Housewife. Yay!
The Etsy shop is getting up there in sales, and in fact, I'm 1 sale away from 300. So I decided to celebrate, the 300th customer will receive a ton of extra goodies with their order. You know you wanna be the one!
And finally! The big contest I mentioned.. I've decided on a prize and it's a good one! So as soon as I hit 100 followers, it's on.

Vintage Family Photos

Here's another weekly feature I'm trying out.. family photos. Vintage ones, of course. I'm really lucky that my family has been able to hold onto them for people like me to cherish. Sure looking at old photos is great, but isn't it so much better when it's someone you know?

Here is one of my mother, aunt and grandparents. I'd guess this was about.. 1950 - 1951? I may be biased, but I think my grandparents were the most attractive couple ever. She looks like a pin up while he has a very James Dean quality about him. My mom would be the baby, while my aunt is the one in the stylin' cowboy boots.

And I loved it!

Just wanted to do a quick 'Thank you thank you' post for Christine from I'm Not Old, I'm Vintage. She recently did a Valentine's Day giveaway, and I was a winner! One of many, even! I thought it was extremely nice of her to have so many winners. My prize was a big priority mail box filled with candy and soaps and other adorable little things. Sometimes when you're having the worst of days, you get a small little thing like that to just brighten it on up. So thanks for being oh so sweet!

Rockabilly Riot (#7) - 7 Shot Screamers

7 Shot Screamers - '77 punk rock mixed just right with '50s vintage rocknroll. I'm completely surprised I haven't done this one yet. This band is easily my favorite of any modern rockabilly act, mostly for the fact that it's different and new. I don't know about you, but I personally get tired of flaming dice and boppin' with my baby. (Don't get me wrong, you know I love that too. But spice it up!)

7 Shot Screamers are another Heavy Rebel Weekender staple and in fact, the first thing I do when each years lineup comes out is hope they'll be on it. I can vouch that they put on one of the greatest live shows... Take the video for example. This was from HRW07, and I'm proud to say I was in on this insanity!

Rockabilly Riot (#6) - The Bo Stevens

The Bo-Stevens : Keep it Country. It's exactly that. A band much more on the honky tonk side of rockabilly. Think Hank Williams style country, not the pop radio mess. Songs to dance to and songs to drink whiskey and cry to are what you'll get from these fellas. As with a lot of the bands I'll feature here, I found them at Heavy Rebel Weekender and have had the pleasure of seeing them many times in my years attending Loserville events. It never gets old, lemme tell you. In fact, the reason I decided to pick them for this week was because I'll be seeing them again this Saturday.

Snowed in!

This winter has been the worst for snow I've ever seen. Global warming, hmph! Even here in Virginia where sure, it gets mighty cold and might flurry a bit, we've got 8 inches and counting. Times like these you really just wanna sit around with some Irish coffee (extra whiskey, please!) in front of the fire and do nothing. Unfortunately, I have neither coffee nor whiskey, and the fire place has never worked. So, I'll stick to playing online in my pjs until I have to get some work done later. If you're one of the lucky (or I'd say unlucky) ones caught up in this storm, stay warm!

Rockabilly Riot (#5) - Phil Hummer

This week, it's the dirty, southern, whiskey soaked music of Phil Hummer and The White Falcons. If you like David Allen Coe or Hank III, you'll probably love this.

There isn't a whole lot of explaining or backstory for this. You just listen. When I was in Nashville in a few weeks ago, I ran into the band at a bar and I do believe the only words I slurred out were "Hey. Your music is my shit." That about sums it up, I'd say!

I have so much trouble remembering to do this on a certain day. So I'm not gonna! Just a once a week post about a band I like.

This week.. Mad Tea Party! Hello, ukulele? Amazing. My personal favorite song is Zombie Boogie, which you can hear on their Myspace page. These folks have a great live show too, I tell ya!
